Artist's impression of a gamma-ray burst jet breaking out of a collapsing star

Gamma-ray burst · 29 August 2019

GRB 190829A

A nearby gamma-ray burst whose very-high-energy afterglow H.E.S.S. followed for several nights, with X-ray and TeV spectra that look strikingly alike.

Our part

Fabian drafted the first GCN circular and Astronomer's Telegram and led one of the two independent H.E.S.S. analyses.

Follow-up, step by step

  1. Evening of 29 Aug
    Fermi and Swift

The burst is detected and localised.

  2. T0 + ~4.5 h
    H.E.S.S.

Observations start; a signal in the real-time analysis leads the crew to extend them.

  3. Next morning
    H.E.S.S. transients group

Data quality and results are checked; a GCN circular and an Astronomer's Telegram go out.

  4. Following nights
    H.E.S.S.

The region is observed for several more days.

  5. June 2021
    Publications

Science paper showing the similarity of the X-ray and very-high-energy emission.
