GRB 180720B

The first detection of very-high-energy gamma rays from a gamma-ray burst, deep in its afterglow.

Our part

Fabian convenes the H.E.S.S. transients working group, which runs the GRB observation programme. He was not part of the analysis of this burst.

Follow-up, step by step

  1. T0
    Gamma-ray satellites

The burst is detected and localised.

  2. T0 + 10 h
    H.E.S.S.

The position becomes visible from Namibia; the team decides to search for an afterglow.

  3. T0 + 10 to 12 h
    H.E.S.S.

Two hours of data reveal a new point-like source at the burst position.
